Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage picked up nearby show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were residing in the region possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as such was not reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embodied a much larger area than merely the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put in till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the following decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has seen increased development in the past several years.
