Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity show evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who developed a market in around the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were residing in the area almost certainly since the sixth century. The village existing then is not cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a way greater area than merely the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the ensuing years and the development of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town that's seen greater development in current times.
