Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lies near to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins found near by show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics picked up indicate that they were residing in the locale most probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't cited till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a much wider area than only the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may perhaps have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that has seen accelerated development in current times.
