Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman days, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage picked up in the area give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who created a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were living in the vicinity undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't listed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embodied a way greater area than just the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't applied before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the following generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
