Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to Roman days, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lays next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were living in the local area probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't cited until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a significantly wider area than simply the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be applied till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
