Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies very close to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins stumbled upon near by offer evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered reveal that they were settling the area more than likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was is not remarked upon till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a far greater area than just the town itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger during the succeeding generations and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town which has seen improved development in recent years.
