Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins discovered near by give proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon imply that they were residing in the neighbourhood perhaps from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time was not reported till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a considerably bigger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the coming years and the building of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town that has witnessed greater development in current times.
