Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed in the area give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered mean that they were settling the vicinity perhaps since the 6th Century. The commune as such was not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a far wider area than only the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not appended till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the ensuing decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town that has seen improved development in the past few years.
