Located in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins stumbled on near by offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were settling the area possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not documented till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a substantially greater area than simply the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not put in prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop.
