The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a far greater area than only the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't put in before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese.
