Based in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a history stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage found nearby show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the region undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement as such is not cited till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a significantly larger area than just the town alone, and included the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get put on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's witnessed increased development in the past few years.
