Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage discovered in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood probably from the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't documented till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a far wider area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be included up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the coming decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
