Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lays next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area give proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon imply that they were settling the vicinity perhaps from the sixth century. The commune existing at that time wasn't reported until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a considerably bigger area than simply the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name could possibly have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the succeeding generations and the development of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has seen greater development in the past few decades.
