Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a past stretching back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage discovered in the area give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place during the tenth century, and relics unearthed indicate that they were settling the local area more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't discussed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a lot greater area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name will have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be put on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the succeeding years and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has witnessed accelerated development in current times.
