Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage stumbled on in the area offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who introduced the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were residing in the area undoubtedly from the sixth century. The village existing at that time was not mentioned till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a lot wider area than merely the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the following decades and the development of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen improved development in the past few decades.
