Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the times of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays very close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled on in the area offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the locale possibly from the sixth century. The commune as it was was not referred to until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a lot wider area than simply the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't included till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that has seen increased development in the past several years.
