Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman times, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old relics and coins stumbled upon in close proximity give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not referred to until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a significantly wider area than only the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the coming years and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past several years.
