Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lays close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage picked up in the area offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts found suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood most likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing then is not documented until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a way greater area than only the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get added up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the ensuing generations and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few years.
