Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story stretching back to the times of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage stumbled on in the area show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were residing in the vicinity more than likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't described till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a way larger area than merely the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name may likely have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not inserted before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
