Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies very close to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage picked up nearby offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the region probably from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a substantially greater area than simply the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger through the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that's witnessed greater development in modern times.
