Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman times, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage picked up in the area offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were dwelling in the local area almost certainly from the sixth century. The village existing at that time isn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a significantly greater area than just the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the following generations and the building of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
