Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman times, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins discovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, came through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were residing in the region more than likely from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't reported till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a lot wider area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the following years and the development of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town which has seen greater development in the past several years.
