Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county border between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past going back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is situated near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins unearthed in the area show proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the locale perhaps since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't remarked upon until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a far wider area than simply the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could quite possibly have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be appended prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the ensuing years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has witnessed greater development in recent times.
