Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the times of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins unearthed nearby show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on mean that they were settling the area possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't described till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a considerably greater area than only the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the succeeding years and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town that has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
