Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found near to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins unearthed in close proximity give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered indicate that they were inhabiting the locale perhaps from the 6th Century. The commune as such is not cited until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a way wider area compared to the town itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get appended until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town that's witnessed greater development in modern times.
