Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to the days of the Romans, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins discovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the region possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't listed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a lot wider area than just the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get appended till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the following years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past few decades.
