Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the days of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed very close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage discovered nearby give proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up a market in around the 10th Century, and relics unearthed show that they were staying in the area more than likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a way bigger area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be appended until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
