Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage discovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up imply that they were residing in the local area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a lot larger area than merely the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the following decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
