Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story stretching back to Roman days, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins stumbled on nearby show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place during the tenth century, and relics found suggest that they were residing in the area quite possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't reported until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a way greater area than only the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not included till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the ensuing generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
