Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around 37,000 and a historical past extending back to the Roman period, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were settling the local area in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't observed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a significantly wider area compared to the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not inserted till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming decades and the building of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has witnessed accelerated development in current times.
