Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman days, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands near to the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage found in the area give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were residing in the region probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a far wider area compared to the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not applied prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the coming years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that has seen greater development in modern times.
