Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins discovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market in around the 10th Century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were living in the region almost certainly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then is not documented till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a lot wider area than simply the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be inserted before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's witnessed improved development in recent years.
