Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located near the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins unearthed near by show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon mean that they were living in the local area probably from the 6th Century. The commune as such is not referred to until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a far larger area compared to the town itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not included up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following years and the development of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that's seen accelerated development in recent years.
