Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is situated near the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins unearthed near by give proof of this. The old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics uncovered indicate that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood most probably from the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a considerably wider area than simply the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may likely have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop.
