Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman period, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins found nearby offer proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were living in the local area almost certainly since the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't discussed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a far bigger area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be applied until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town which has witnessed improved development in recent times.
