Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated very close to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins picked up near by show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who introduced the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were staying in the vicinity most probably from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a lot wider area than just the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not inserted up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing during the coming generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
