Set within the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman period, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins picked up in the area give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts found suggest that they were residing in the area almost certainly from the sixth century. The commune existing at this time was not referred to till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a way greater area than only the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be included until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the following decades and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
