Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins picked up in close proximity give proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the local area possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't discussed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a considerably larger area than just the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name might possibly have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be inserted prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the coming generations and the development of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town which has witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
