Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage found in close proximity give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on reveal that they were dwelling in the vicinity quite possibly since the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't described till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a far bigger area than merely the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not inserted before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the succeeding decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen increased development in the recent past.
