Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins stumbled upon nearby show proof of this. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on imply that they were inhabiting the local area in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a far wider area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not put in prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the coming years and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town which has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
