Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located near to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early relics and coinage discovered nearby offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the local area more than likely since the 6th Century. The commune as such is not remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a lot bigger area than merely the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not inserted till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the ensuing decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has witnessed improved development in the past few years.
