Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins discovered near by offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts found show that they were residing in the vicinity almost certainly from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time is not reported till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a lot bigger area than simply the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't included till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger during the ensuing decades and the building of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow.
