Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman times, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on reveal that they were residing in the area possibly from the sixth century. The village existing then wasn't discussed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a significantly greater area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could very well have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't included before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's witnessed accelerated development in current times.
