Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the Roman period, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage stumbled on in the area offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were residing in the neighbourhood most probably from the sixth century. The village existing at that time wasn't documented until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a way greater area than just the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not appended up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the ensuing years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's seen accelerated development in the past several years.
