Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county border between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a story harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in around the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were residing in the vicinity possibly from the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't documented till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a way greater area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming generations and the building of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's witnessed improved development in the past several years.
