Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins discovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were inhabiting the region quite possibly since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a far greater area than simply the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be put in until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following decades and the construction of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
