Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins found nearby give proof of this. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were living in the area almost certainly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was isn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a lot larger area compared to the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could quite possibly have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put in before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the coming generations and the building of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has seen increased development in the recent past.
