Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins found in the area give proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon indicate that they were residing in the neighbourhood undoubtedly from the sixth century. The village existing then isn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a much bigger area than merely the town itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be inserted till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following years and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
