Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage found in close proximity give proof of this. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities found suggest that they were settling the vicinity in all probability from the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time is not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a way wider area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't appended until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding during the ensuing years and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen improved development in the past few decades.
