Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins found in close proximity give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were residing in the vicinity quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village existing then was not observed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a substantially greater area than only the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be appended up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the succeeding decades and the construction of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen increased development in modern times.
