Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the days of the Romans, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed near to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins uncovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were residing in the neighbourhood more than likely from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a significantly wider area than merely the town alone, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put in prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the ensuing years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town which has seen improved development in current times.
