The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage discovered near by give proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place during the tenth century, and relics stumbled on show that they were living in the neighbourhood in all probability since the sixth century. The village as it was then isn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a far wider area compared to the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name might have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't included until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
