Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to Roman days, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins discovered nearby give proof of this. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were staying in the area possibly since the sixth century. The village as it was then wasn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a way bigger area than only the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added on until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the ensuing years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town which has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
