Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins stumbled upon near by show evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered show that they were residing in the area very likely since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time was not mentioned till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a considerably bigger area than just the town itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name will probably have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the following generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow.
