Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to Roman days, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage picked up nearby offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were settling the locale in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune existing then isn't mentioned till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a far wider area than just the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't put on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the coming years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has seen increased development in the recent past.
