The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coinage uncovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts found suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity most probably from the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't listed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a lot larger area than merely the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put in until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the succeeding years and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop.
