Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman times, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the region almost certainly from the 6th Century. The village existing then isn't mentioned till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a far bigger area than only the town alone, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get inserted up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing decades and the development of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's seen increased development in the past few years.
